Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is a common thermoplastic polymer made from acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. Acrylonitrile is a synthetic monomer produced from propylene and ammonia; butadiene is a petroleum hydrocarbon obtained from the C4 fraction of steam cracking; and styrene monomer is produced by dehydrogenating ethylbenzene, itself made from ethylene and benzene. ABS combines strength with hardness, gloss, durability and electrical insulating properties. Common machining methods include turning, drilling, milling, cutting, stamping and shearing. ABS is also a popular material for 3D printing filament — its high dimensional stability and range of post-processing options (sanding, painting, gluing, filling) make it well suited to prototyping. Specialized ABS filament variants include ABS-ESD (electrostatic discharge) and ABS-FR (flame retardant), used for electrostatically sensitive components and fire-resistant assemblies respectively.
