Textile is a collective term for all products made by knitting, weaving or pressing various natural, man-made or synthetic fibers; when the finished product is a thin material, it's called fabric. Textile manufacturing involves a range of treatments that alter its physical and chemical properties, and these treatments are specific to each type of textile — cotton, for example, is typically boiled and bleached. Historically, textiles were made only from natural (animal and plant) fibers; since industrialization, man-made and synthetic fibers have been introduced as additives or as the primary material.
